Busboys and Poets 14th & V
2021 14th St NW, Washington, United States
Hubert Harrison, the “father of Harlem radicalism,” blazed a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party. His Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in history. And he defended free love. Because of his radicalism, however, Harrison’s visionary legacy has been erased from popular memory. Until now.
Dr. Brian Kwoba is joining us on the Busboys stage alongside Benjamin Woods, labor union organizer and member of Black Alliance for Peace, to dive into Hubert Harrison’s life and ideas, and Dr. Kwoba’s “theoretically nuanced account of the connections and ruptures within Black intellectual and social thought” (Claudrena Harold, University of Virginia). Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and Dr. Kwoba will be signing following the program.
This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 5:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of HUBERT HARRISON will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is in person and will not be livestreamed.
We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books
Dr. Brian Kwoba is an associate professor of history and Director of the African and African American Studies Program at the University of Memphis. Over the past two decades, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism, immigrant workers rights, climate justice, Falastin, decolonizing education, and the movement for Black lives. His new book, Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism, is an intellectual biography of one of history's most under-appreciated political visionaries.
Benjamin Woods is originally from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For the past twenty years, he has been active as a student, community, and labor organizer. Ben graduated with a degree in Africana Studies from Cornell University.
